Neurodivergent Minds
Neuro differences are common in the studio, so we'll look at the main ones we see. What they are and how these differences show up in sessions
Neurodivergent simply means having a brain that processes and functions in the world differently. Not defectively, just different.
Neurodivergent minds are wired differently. Their brains preference certain areas over others.. like over the prefrontal cortex that is home to our Executive functions.
Neurodivergent minds are wired differently. Their brains preference certain areas over others.. like over the prefrontal cortex that is home to our Executive functions. Executive dysfunction can lead to shame and masking.
ND's experience the sensory world differently. Some requiring lots of sensory input, and some who a triggered by particular sensory systems.
A moment to address language
Ipsarty is an identity affirming practice, which means we are particular about the language used with and to describe our neurodivergent folks.. including ourselves.

For a long time in healthcare education and schooling it has been preferred to you person first language, ie person living with autism. Some clients choose to use this language, but we do not. We stand with the #actuallyautistic community in doing our part to minimise shame around labels and diagnoses. Being autistic or ADHD is part of someones identity, not something they live with. Our brains are who we are and how we operate in this world.

So here's some differences in language we use.
"Defects/disorders/dysfunction/dysphoria", they are simply a DIFFERENCE
"High functioning/low functioning" implies good/bad, simply describe LIVED EXPERIENCE
"Symptoms/presentation/issues/problems" are seen as CHALLENGES and CHALLENGED BY
"Treatment/interventions"are really just seen as empowered SUPPORT
